Kartik Aaryan’s Sugar-Free Journey: Tips to Reduce Sugar Intake and Live Healthier

Slashing excess sugar intake can be challenging but not impossible. That what Actor Kartik Aryan proved while it came to preparing for his physically demanding role in Chandu Champion—a sports drama—Kartik made a significant transformation by cutting out sweets entirely for nearly two years. In a recent interaction, the Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 lead actor also opened up about practical ways to reduce sugar intake and maintain a healthier lifestyle. Here’s how the heartthrob did it, and how you can too.

Here are a few tips on how to reduce sugar intake in the body.

Avoid Desserts with added sugar – Desserts are often loaded with sugars that cause a sudden spike in blood sugar levels that can be harmful for the body. Dairy-based desserts such as pies, doughnuts, cakes, pastries and ice cream account for around 18% of added sugar intake and are best avoided. If you want to satisfy your sweet tooth, go for desserts that have less sugar such as Greek yoghurt with fruits, dark chocolate, baked fruits with cream and fresh fruits. Doing this will not only reduce sugar intake but also provide fibre, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants needed by the body.

Say No to Sugary Drinks – Energy drinks, carbonated beverages, soda etc. and even fruit juices that are perceived to be healthy, are high on sugar and contribute significantly to your calorie intake. These calories are absorbed quickly in the blood and increase the sugar level. Thus, if you are looking for weight loss, this is the first thing to remove from your diet intake. Drink herbal tea, black or green tea, water or coffee instead.

Eat Whole Foods – Whole foods are free from additives and other artificial substances as they are not processed or refined. Legumes, whole grains and whole fruits can be incorporated in your diet. Sugary cereals, chips and other fast foods are some examples of ultra-processed foods that contribute to the sugar level and must be avoided by those looking to cut sugar intake.

Read Labels Carefully – It is now mandatory for food manufacturers to mention all ingredients on the food label, so read it carefully before buying. Avoid foods that have rice syrup, dextrose, fructose corn syrup, molasses and caramel, to name a few.

Wrapping up

A diet that is high in added sugars can be detrimental for your health, so take control of your sugar intake and switch to healthier foods.
