Shubman Gill might make his debut as India’s ODI captain in the final group-stage clash of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against New Zealand in Dubai on Sunday. Reports from The Indian Express suggest that the team management is considering resting regular captain Rohit Sharma for the inconsequential match. Rohit sustained a hamstring injury while chasing a ball during Pakistan’s innings in India’s second Group A match on February 23. Though he attempted to continue playing, his discomfort was apparent before he left the field in the 26th over.

Shubman Gill, serving as the designated vice-captain, temporarily took charge before Rohit returned after a few overs. However, despite his return, Rohit did not appear to be at full fitness. Concerns regarding his condition intensified when he abstained from batting during India’s first training session in Dubai on Wednesday, just two days after their victory over Pakistan.

Multiple reports confirm that Rohit was the only Indian batter who did not participate in batting practice during the team’s rigorous session. He even skipped throwdowns, instead engaging in lengthy strategic discussions with head coach Gautam Gambhir. However, a glimmer of hope emerged when Rohit managed a short sprint, suggesting that while the injury may not be severe enough to derail India’s Champions Trophy campaign, it could still warrant his exclusion from the New Zealand fixture.

With both India and New Zealand having secured semi-final berths, the upcoming match holds little significance in terms of progression. The only stake remaining is securing the top spot in Group A. Another crucial factor in India’s decision to potentially rest Rohit is the narrow one-day gap between the New Zealand match and their semi-final clash scheduled for Tuesday, March 4.
