Sharib Hashmi has opened up about a career regret that still stings. In a recent interview, the actor revealed that he came very close to bagging a key role in the Sanju movie — one that eventually became one of the film’s emotional pillars.
And that’s not the only blockbuster he almost starred in.
Sanju Movie: Who Played Kamli in Sanju?
Speaking to Filmigyan, Sharib Hashmi shared that he auditioned several times for the role of Kamli in Sanju. “Mujhe Sanju ka ek bada afsos hai,” he said, explaining that he was shortlisted and remained in contention for quite some time.
The role eventually went to Vicky Kaushal. For those wondering who played Kamli in Sanju, it was Kaushal’s performance that left audiences emotional.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the Sanju movie starred Ranbir Kapoor as Sanjay Dutt. Kamli, a fictionalised version of Dutt’s close friend Paresh Ghelani, became the moral anchor of the story.
Vicky’s portrayal earned widespread praise for its warmth and loyalty-driven arc. The film went on to earn over ₹500 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of its time.
For Sharib, missing that opportunity remains a “bada afsos.” But as he puts it, “vo naseeb ki baat hai.”
Who Played Chand Nawab in Bajrangi Bhaijaan?
Sharib also revealed that he auditioned for another iconic role — this time in Bajrangi Bhaijaan. He confirmed that he went through multiple audition rounds for the character later made famous by Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
If you’re asking who played Chand Nawab in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, it was Nawazuddin’s quirky turn as the Pakistani TV journalist that won hearts.
Directed by Kabir Khan and headlined by Salman Khan, the film told the story of Bajrangi helping a mute Indian girl reunite with her family across the border. Chand Nawab added humour and heart to the journey.
The film collected over ₹900 crore globally and became one of Indian cinema’s biggest blockbusters. Missing two roles in films of that scale would make any actor pause and reflect.
Sharib, however, chooses perspective over bitterness.
Sharib Hashmi’s Career Moves Ahead
Despite the missed roles in Sanju movie and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Sharib’s journey hasn’t slowed down. He recently appeared in Gustaakh Ishq alongside Vijay Varma and Fatima Sana Shaikh.
He was also seen in Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, a spy comedy backed by Aamir Khan and directed by Vir Das. Beyond films, Sharib has returned to writing and recently collaborated on a stage play with Tannishtha Chatterjee.
Up next, he will feature in Welcome To Jungle, which boasts an ensemble cast including Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Raveena Tandon.
Two missed blockbusters. Multiple ongoing projects. That’s Bollywood — sometimes it’s timing, sometimes it’s destiny.
Sharib may have lost Kamli and Chand Nawab, but his story is still unfolding.
