When it comes to banana production in India, Maharashtra stands at the top and a big reason behind that is Jalgaon, famously known as the “Banana Capital of India”.
This city plays a huge role in the state’s banana farming, contributing nearly 69% of Maharashtra’s total cultivation. On a national level, Jalgaon alone produces about 16% of all bananas grown in India, making it one of the most important agricultural hubs in the country.
Jalgaon’s bananas are not just about quantity, they’re also known for quality. Since 2016, they have held a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, which officially recognises their unique origin and standards. The region is especially known for varieties like Basrai, Shrimanti, and Grand Naine, which are widely appreciated for their taste and consistency.
One of the biggest reasons behind this success is the city’s natural environment. Located between the Satpuda Range and the Ajanta Range, Jalgaon benefits from fertile volcanic soil and favourable climate conditions. These factors create the perfect setting for large-scale banana farming.
Beyond farming, bananas themselves are packed with health benefits. They are low in calories and rich in potassium, which helps maintain healthy blood pressure and supports heart health. They also contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, which aids digestion, prevents constipation, and supports gut health by feeding beneficial bacteria.
Bananas are also a great source of natural sugars like glucose, fructose, and sucrose. This makes them an excellent quick energy boost, especially before or after workouts, without adding fat or cholesterol.
