Aditya Prabhu suicide case: A B Tech student who was found with a phone during a test in Bengaluru committed suicide and caused outrage. There’s nothing new about Aditya Prabhu’s suicide. The most heartbreaking thing was his mother waiting for him in the campus foyer while he lay lifeless. Her social media narrative of university management insensitivity and invigilator abuse was heartbreaking. Last week, another Class 7 girl committed herself due to teacher bullying. Academic pressure, harassment by teachers and parents, isolation, abuse, violence, family troubles, and mental diseases lead many young children to commit suicide.

The college administration is being criticized for taunting Aditya into taking such a drastic action, even though the jury is still out. A child should not be publicly humiliated for bringing a phone to the exam. Remember that schools are temples of learning for the entire development of young minds. Teenage bewilderment and vulnerability should be considered by college officials. Counseling misbehaving pupils is preferable than scaring them.

Suicide is become commonplace. Pre-teens are killing themselves. The National Crime Records Bureau (2021) reported approximately 13,000 student suicides in India, mostly in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Academic strain is a leading cause of suicide in elite professional universities like IITs and IIMs, and Kota coaching classes in Rajasthan have become synonymous with suicide.

Social media, peer approbation, and even parents reprimanding teenagers for bad grades or taking their phones might contribute to suicide. Is social media making our brave new generations fragile? Parents and society must convince children that every problem has a solution that is not suicide.
