Ajay Devgn and director Rohit Shetty, currently riding high on the success of their latest film Singham Again, have recently shared their thoughts on the changing portrayal of male action stars in contemporary cinema. In a candid discussion, Ajay Devgn expressed that today’s generation of actors often fails to capture the essence of “men” in their action performances, making it harder for audiences to connect with them as convincingly as before.
Ajay Devgn delved into what he perceives as the defining difference: “In today’s world, you don’t see the dominating male personality. All are boys; you don’t see men-men.” He emphasized that earlier generations of actors, such as Amitabh Bachchan and Jackie Shroff, had a distinct “manly” aura, a trait he believes modern stars often lack. He attributed this shift to changes in upbringing, stating that building a muscular physique does not automatically translate to a commanding on-screen presence. According to him, there is an “attitude and approach toward life” that today’s actors are missing.
Adding his perspective, Rohit Shetty reminisced about Ajay Devgn’s real-life daring episodes in the 90s, illustrating a more fearless, raw attitude. He shared an anecdote involving a car chase in Mumbai, where Ajay took charge, unafraid of confrontation. Both Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty noted that their past experiences, including street fights where soda bottles were their improvised “weapons,” reflect a different, bolder era.
