Almost 51 Crimes Against Women Every Hour, Nationwide Reality

Delhi will have the highest national rate of crime against women in 2022, according to the National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) annual crime report. In 2022, the national capital registered 14,247 cases, with a rate of 144.4 per lakh, significantly higher than the 66.4 national average. In the nation’s capital, there were 14,277 crimes against women in 2021, compared to 10,093 in 2020.

According to NCRB data, in 2022, Uttar Pradesh registered 65,743 First Information Reports (FIRs) for crimes against women. Maharashtra registered 45,331, Rajasthan 45,058, West Bengal 34,738, and Madhya Pradesh 32,765. Together, these five states accounted for 50.2% (2,23,635 cases) of all cases filed in the nation in 2022.

Twelve states and Union territories had crime rates that were greater than the 66.4 national average, according to NCRB data. Delhi, the nation’s capital, came in first place with a crime rate of 144.4, followed by Telangana (117), Rajasthan (115.1), Odisha (103), Andhra Pradesh (96.2), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (93.7), Kerala (82), Assam (81), Madhya Pradesh (78.8), Uttarakhand (77), Maharashtra (75.1), West Bengal (71.8), and Uttar Pradesh (58.6).

The NCRB statistics also showed that there were about 51 FIRs for crimes against women per hour last year, totaling 4, 45,256 instances nationwide. In 2020, the numbers were 3, 71,503, and in 2021, 4, 28,278.

According to NCRB statistics, abuse by a spouse or his family accounted for 31.4% of all crimes against women under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This was followed by kidnapping and abduction (19.2%), assault on women to offend her modesty (18.7%), and rape (7.1%). According to the NCRB, an increase in police data (FIR) does not imply a rise in crime. It indicates that an increasing number of individuals are reporting crimes.
