Amazon is sacking Alexa workers to focus on AI. The layoffs affect US, Canadian, and Indian employees…
Amazon is laying off hundreds of Alexa employees as it invests more in AI. Amazon’s vice president of Alexa and Fire TV Daniel Rausch wrote to workers on November 17 saying the business is cutting posts due to canceled initiatives. “As we continue to invent, we’re shifting some of our efforts to better align with our business priorities and what we know matters most to customers—including maximising our resources and efforts on generative AI,” Rausch wrote.
He stated “several hundred” roles would be cut but did not specify. Job losses announced Friday will affect US, Canadian, and Indian workers.
Seattle-based Amazon faces stiff competition from other tech businesses capitalizing on the generative AI frenzy.
In recent months, the company has added AI to customer reviews and offered developers a platform to build their own AI products on its AWS cloud infrastructure.
Amazon added generative AI to Alexa in September.
The announcement to reduce personnel follows recent layoffs in Amazon’s games and music businesses and adds to the 27,000 employees fired off late last year and early this year.
The cuts also affected Amazon’s Alexa.
