Amitabh Bachhan bestows Commonwealth Vocational University’s Honoris Causa Doctorate Award to his make-up man Deepak Sawant

The countless fans of Amitabh Bachhan can never forget the way he appeared in the film Shahenshah, in which he played a young corrupt cop by day, and an old vigilante in the night. There are many other movies, including Hum,  and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, in which the way the megastar looked  helped him portray his emotions so well in those films. But you have wondered about the artists who have helped Amitabh Bachhan don those looks that have made him the unforgettable megastar. One such artist is Deepak Sawant, who has been bestowed with an award by the Commonwealth Vocational University for working as a personal makeup man of Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachhan without a single day’s leave, and other significant achievements.

Makeup artists are like many film industry professionals whose services are rarely noticed, as they work behind-the-scenes to help the movies achieve success and even become a super hit. The job of a movie makeup artist is not easy, as it takes years of training and incredible dedication to work consistently. It is the makeup artist who designs each character’s look. They are the ones who eventually ensure the actors look flawless on screen with makeup that brings their characters to life.These make-up artists work hard day and night and wait for the moment when their efforts behind the scenes will be recognized and they will be awarded.

The Commonwealth Vocational University brought that moment in the life of Deepak Sawant by bestowing the prestigious Honorary Doctorate Award on him.

In addition to working as a make-up artist with the megastar without being absent for even one day, the award  was conferred on Deepak Sawant for his achievements including Mera Gaon Mera Desh Smart  Village Make in India Project and contributions towards the development of the nation and  society.

Located in the Kingdom of Tonga, the Commonwealth Vocational University is a 21st Century new age learning institution. It is the premier institute of higher learning across the Kingdom of Tonga that provides expert knowledge and quality education programmes in diverse fields.

Deepak Sawant received the award  from the hands of  Superstar Amitabh Bachhan. Founder Member, Commonwealth Vocational University, Mr Rakesh Mittal, Founder Member Commonwealth Vocational University, Kingdom of Tonga, 1st Indian to Achieve 174 World Records and Meditation Trainor of Brahmakumaris Dr Dipak Harke and Vihan Aniket Harke are presentDeepak Sawant, who lives in Mumbai, has been working as a makeup artist in the Indian film industry for the last 50 years.

He has worked for 48 years as Amitabh Bachhan’s personal make-up artist in 250 movies.  Deepak Sawant’s first association with the megastar was for the 1972 movie Raaste Kaa Patthar. After that he was a part of Zameer, Kabhie Kabhie, The Great Gambler, Hum, Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Black, and many others.

In the mean time, Deepak Sawant also produced a Bhojpuri movie called Akka in 1994, which featured Jaya and Amitabh Bachchan in special appearances. Deepak Sawant also produced several other films that featured Amitabh Bachchan in lead roles.

Deepak Sawant also worked for 5 years with the late actress Smita Patil.  He has also produced many regional language films.

The films produced by Deepak Sawant include: Lipstick Boy (Hindi) based on the real life story of Uday Kumar;   Gangotri-Ganga-2 (Hindi): Amitabh Bachchan (Special appearance), Manoj Tiwari, Bhumika;  Gangotri-Ganga-2 (Bhojpuri): Amitabh Bachchan (Special appearance), Manoj Tiwari, Bhumika;  The Great Leader (Bhojpuri): Amitabh Bachchan (Special appearance), Jaya Bachchan (Special appearance); Ganga (Hindi): Amitabh Bachchan (Special appearance), Manoj Tiwari, Ravi Kishan;  Ganga (Bhojpuri): Amitabh Bachchan (Special appearance), Manoj Tiwari, Ravi Kishan;  Ganga Devi (Bhojpuri): Amitabh Bachchan (Special appearance) Dinesh Lal, Gulshan Grover;  and Akkaa (Marathi): Ajay Phansekar, Sulabha Deshpande, Prashant Damle.

Deepak Sawant has also been part of the serial Sasuji Na Aakhtara. The serial was based on the writer, Tarakh Mehta, of the Tarak Meht Ka Ulta Chashma serial fame.

But, it is not only the film industry that Deepak Sawant has worked for, as he also been rendering service to humanity. Deepak Sawant also formed an NGO, called SADGATI SOCIAL FOUNDATION, in which he is  planning about 20 acres villages by the title “MERA GAON MERA DESH” (SMART VILLAGE MAKE IN INDIA). Through the NGO, Deepak Sawant  is also planning to provide employment, dispensaries, houses, free fruits and vegetables and business opportunities. The NGO is also looking after nearly 40 street dogs by providing food, medication, shelter, etc. for the animals.

Looking at the the  social services that Deepak Sawant has rendered, his name has also been nominated for the prestigious Padmashree Award.
