Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap gave a rare look into his personal space by opening the doors to his Mumbai duplex home in an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla. Kashyap’s home is simple, practical, and full of stories, in contrast to the opulent residences of many Bollywood celebs. It displays the filmmaker’s intense passion for films, books, and discussions.

Anurag Kashyap’s home is grounded in simplicity

In no way is Anurag Kashyap’s house ostentatious. Rather than art or upscale décor, his living room is crammed with books and DVDs. This is the same house that appears in the Netflix movie AK vs. AK, the director proudly disclosed. Every area of the property represents his creative lifestyle, from the simple dining table that serves as a desk to the grey sofas reserved for senior visitors. Here, he met with authors, conducted brainstorming sessions, and even produced music for his movie Kennedy.

Interestingly, Kashyap’s kitchen used to be a guest bedroom. He revealed that over the years, many filmmakers and artists had stayed at his residence, but he has now “closed his Dharamshala.” He added that he cleared out the room to make it his own, transforming it into a modern kitchen complete with all necessary amenities, such as a microwave and refrigerator—the wooden cupboards and shelves now hold utensils and other items.

Entering his library is like traveling to another planet. With a particular emphasis on graphic novels—a genre he particularly loves—Kashyap displayed rows of books neatly arranged on wooden shelves. The filmmaker’s meticulous preservation of each book demonstrates his love of reading. Additionally, he escorted spectators to his screening room—the same one from AK vs. AK—where he frequently attends movies and loses himself in the theater for hours.

Anurag Kashyap has a small bedroom with little furniture and a room set aside for his work. He revealed that screenplays and other things are frequently stacked on the bed. Like the rest of the house, books and medications are easily accessible, and a television is positioned in one corner. Due to a shortage of cabinet space, pairs of shoes line the corridor, earning him the amusing nickname “shoe library” for his little walk-in closet.

One of Anurag’s favorite places in the house is the terrace. It offers a brief respite from Mumbai’s bustle and is serene and secluded. He revealed that the actress Kalki Koechlin, his ex-wife, had discovered this mansion, and they had decided to buy it. The filmmaker smiled and noted that most large cars cannot fit in the narrow path that leads to his house.

“Only those who truly want to come here put in the effort,” he remarked, adding that movie stars have to exit their cars and walk the remaining distance. He jokingly said, “They must humble themselves.”
