Following hearing arguments from both sides, the Kolkata High Court ordered an impartial inquiry overseen by the superintendent of police for the West Medinipur district. For the upcoming hearing, Justice Joy Sengupta has requested a progress report from the police.
The incident happened at the Debra Police Station in the West Medinipur district on September 28, of last year. The petitioner claimed that the iPhones vanished when they got to Debra in West Medinipur when they were travelling from Chennai to Kolkata.
The transportation business tracks its trucks using a GPS device. According to the GPS system, the truck was purportedly stopped for more than half an hour at a gas station in Debra’s new market area on September 28 around six in the morning.
The transport business reported to the Debra police station after attempting in vain to get in touch with the truck driver. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered the truck was empty.
Apalak Basu, the petitioner’s attorney, surmised that the iPhones may have been taken while the vehicle was moving. They said that the theft may have involved a different vehicle parked next to theirs. In addition, the petitioner emphasised that the truck driver has not been found since the empty vehicle was found, and they accused the police of acting slowly in filing the FIR.
On October 10, 2023, a formal complaint was finally filed, although no one has been taken into custody. The transport firm filed a case in the High Court, claiming that the police had not done enough inquiry.
The High Court directed the district police, working under the superintendent’s direction, to carry out a thorough investigation even though the state denied conducting a sufficient probe. By February 2, 2024, the next hearing date, a progress report is needed.
