Ashwin Highlights Importance Of DRS In Improving Young Batters’ Techniques

Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has emphasized how the Decision Review System (DRS) can help young Indian batters identify and correct flaws in their techniques. Ashwin, closely following the ongoing Duleep Trophy, has been sharing his insights on social media, particularly focusing on how DRS can be a game-changer for domestic cricket.

With several high-profile players participating, the Duleep Trophy has implemented a full version of DRS for the tournament. Ashwin cited the example of Ricky Bhui’s dismissal during the match between India C and India D. Bhui, who was batting on 44, attempted to defend a delivery from Manav Suthar with his bat behind his pads—a technique that worked well in the pre-DRS era of domestic cricket. However, DRS came into play when India C reviewed the on-field umpire’s not-out decision, and the review was successful.

Ashwin pointed out that the availability of DRS in domestic tournaments like the Duleep Trophy allows batters to reassess their techniques and adapt to modern cricket’s evolving challenges.

Ashwin tweeted, “DRS for domestic cricket is not just for the right decisions to be made. Ricky Bhuvi’s dismissal last evening against Manav Suthar is a classic case of a batter who will get away with this technique 10/10 times in FC cricket. This was not a faulty technique pre DRS but now it is. Back in the day batters were given not out just because they managed to get on the front foot. Now, keeping your bat behind the pad can be fatal, imagine someone making the climb to international cricket without getting this experience Ricky got yesterday. He could very well take an entire test series to understand what he needs to work on and his career could well be over. This is a fab experience for more than just one reason.”
