Last November 23, the Assam government began commemorating the 400th birth anniversary of the
renowned hero in New Delhi.

According to the reports, the entries for the world record attempt were posted to a webpage between October and November of last year. While there were entries in over 25 languages, handwritten notes were only kept for the record. Lachit Barphukan was born in 1622 on November 24th.

Lachit, the Ahom leader, commanded the army at the Battle of Saraighat, which ended the Mughal invasion headed by Ramsingh I. On January 23, 1663, Ahom King Jaydhway Singha signed the Ghilajharighat Treaty with the Mughals commanded by Aurangazeb. Chakradhway Singha, his successor, planned for a full-fledged battle to reclaim the lost land, and Lachit Barphukan was chosen as the leader and given the position of Barphukan (commander) in 1667.

He launched a vigorous campaign, attacking and destroying many Mughal outposts until he secured possession of the fort for two months. He skillfully ensured that the Mughals evacuated the area. The Lachit Barphukan gold medal, established in 1999, is given to the top cadet from the National
Defence Academy.
