Astro Tourism Enters India: ‘Nakshatra Sabha’ launched by Uttarakhand Tourism

The first ever holistic Astro Tourism campaign in India is about to begin in early June this year at George Everest, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand- ‘Nakshatra Sabha’

As soon as India announced its first ever Astro tourism campaign- ‘Nakshatra Sabha’ it entered the elite group of countries having favourable atmospheric conditions for such type of travel trend.

The pioneering initiative is a collaboration between the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board and Starscapes (an astro-tourism company). By offering a lifetime of experience to travellers, the state of Uttarakhand aims to become a premier destination providing celestial admirers the chance to explore the wonders of the cosmos under the night sky while contributing to scientific education and awareness.

What is Astro Tourism? 

Astro Tourism is a kind of nature-based tourism that offers travellers a unique glimpse into the universe. It includes any activities related to space and astronomy, such as catching celestial phenomena, and astronomical events, visiting destinations renowned for their dark skies, astronomical observatories and planetariums or even stargazing opportunities, astrophotography contests, and much more.

Astro tourism is one of the biggest and emerging niches in the travel segment, creating a high amount of interest among young travel enthusiasts across the globe. Also known as astronomy tourism, it offers an experience that is largely focused on experiencing and exploring the beauty of the cosmos. 

Countries like Chile, Hawaii, Australia, and Namibia have already established themselves as premier astro-tourism destinations.  These countries enjoy low light pollution, clear skies, and world-class observatories that bring together astronomy enthusiasts, adventurers, astrophotographers, and space enthusiasts from around the globe. Apart from Uttarakhand, India has other destinations like Ladakh, Spiti Valley, and Rann of Kutch that also enjoy perfect conditions for stargazing and observing celestial phenomena.

About The ‘Nakshatra Sabha’ campaign

According to reports the ‘Nakshatra Sabha’ campaign is scheduled to start by June 2024 and will stay till mid-2025. The campaign will be carried out at various scenic locations of the state like – Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Nainital, Pithoragarh, etc. During the maiden mission, the Government plans to feature a range of activities for participants -from night stargazing, and special solar observations including the progress of the Aditya Mission to astrophotography contests, and camping under the stars. The Astro tourists will get to use high-tech telescopes to get a deep-sky experience. Moreover, the event list also includes a chance to participate in expert-guided sessions and webinars.

The Uttarakhand Government with this initiative is eyeing to boost the local economy along with sustainable tourism practices. The State government in collaboration with Starscapes will actively communicate with local hospitality and travel partners, as well as residents, and impart them necessary training and support to ensure the successful execution of this Campaign.
