Indian football icon Sunil Chhetri has spoken out in support of Virat Kohli decision to retire from Test cricket, urging fans and critics alike to focus less on the speculation surrounding the move and more on the peace Kohli has found in his choice. While the news of Kohli stepping away from the red-ball game left a large section of fans in disbelief, Chhetri offered a grounded perspective on the matter.

Chhetri and Kohli share more than just fame—they are both regarded as sporting heroes of Bengaluru, having led Bengaluru FC and Royal Challengers Bengaluru with passion and pride. Earlier this year, Chhetri himself returned from retirement to rejoin the Indian national football team, bringing immense joy to his fans. In contrast, Kohli’s announcement was met with sorrow, marking the end of an era after a remarkable career that spanned 123 Test matches and included 30 centuries.

While speaking in an interview, Chhetri reflected on his friend’s retirement and made it clear that he was not caught off guard. “I’m not actually surprised at the decision. But knowing that he’s at peace, I’m happy for him,” he shared.

He went on to describe the emotional weight that must have accompanied Kohli’s decision, particularly given the deep love the former India captain has for the traditional format. “Knowing Virat, he must have taken a lot of time to call it off. Especially Test cricket. Even with my knowledge, I know and you know how much he loves playing Test matches. So, for him to call it a day, even at his peak, especially when you have fans who’ll urge him to keep playing for another year or so, it’s big. For him to call ‘Alvida’ to the format he loves the most, it must have been difficult for him.”

Sunil Chhetri emphasized that the most reassuring part of it all is Virat Kohli state of mind. “But the good thing is he sounds at peace, and he knows what he’s doing,” he added.

Despite the emotional reactions and ongoing speculation about whether recent form played a part in the decision, Chhetri’s words offered a reminder that the narrative doesn’t need to revolve around performance or timing. Instead, he encouraged a shift in focus—to appreciate the legacy, respect the decision, and find contentment in knowing that Kohli himself has.
