Babar Azam Is Rested Not Dropped, Clarifies Pakistan’s Coach Azhar Mahmood

Pakistan’s former captain Babar Azam will not feature in Pakistan’s last two Tests of the ongoing three-match series against England. The 30-year-old right-hander was excluded from the squad announced for the final Tests, sparking speculation about his omission. However, Pakistan assistant coach Azhar Mahmood clarified on Monday that Babar has not been dropped but rested, in line with a decision by the new selection committee.

Speaking to reporters on the eve of the second Test, Azhar Mahmood explained that Babar was eager to play, but the management believed rest was necessary for him given Pakistan’s upcoming packed schedule. “He (Babar) hasn’t been dropped. He has been rested. The management understands that there has been a lot happening in the last few months. Even if you are mentally strong, it can still affect you. Babar was willing to play, but the decision was made for him to rest so he can come back fresh,” Mahmood said.

Babar Azam, who is celebrating his 30th birthday on Tuesday (October 15), remains Pakistan’s top player, according to Azhar Mahmood. The decision to rest him was made keeping in mind Pakistan’s future commitments, which include tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

“Babar is our No. 1 player. His technique and ability are unquestionable. Given Pakistan’s upcoming FTP (Future Tours Programme), there’s a lot of cricket ahead, and it was important to rest him now so he can return fresh,” Mahmood added.

The assistant coach also noted that fast bowlers Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi were similarly rested, not dropped, due to their heavy workloads and minor injury concerns. “Naseem had a few niggles, and Shaheen has been playing a lot of cricket. So, we decided to rest them as well,” Mahmood explained.

This rotation approach by the new management aims to ensure key players are physically and mentally prepared for the intense cricketing calendar that extends into April next year.
