Located amidst the breathtaking landscapes of the Western Ghats, Maharashtra, treks to both these forts push the limits of courage and skill, offering unforgettable experiences amidst the breathtaking landscapes Sahyadri Mountains. Harihar Fort and Kalavantin Durg Trek are known for their steep perpendicular climbs, vertigo-inducing heights, rugged terrains, and exposed trails, offering trekkers thrilling yet dangerous experiences.
Harihar Fort:
Location: Situated in the Trimbak region in Nashik district
Height/ Elevation: Stands at an elevation of 3,676 feet above sea level.
The Challenge: Built during the Yadava dynasty, the fort is erected from a triangular prism of rock. The edges of the Harihar fort are almost vertical. The trekkers have to climb the famous “staircase to heaven,” a steep rock-cut staircase (which is almost vertical) leading to the top of the fort from the base village. Trekkers take the help of the notches carved in the rocks for support while navigating through the narrow traverse and exposed sections. The moss formation on the steps makes the trek more difficult. It may take almost two hours to reach the top through the iconic steps.
Travellers Reward– The top of the fort offers a 360-degree view of the Sahyadri’s Trimbakeshwar region. Enjoy the mesmerizing view of all the famous peaks and forts such as Basgad, Anjaneri Fort, Brahmagiri, Utwad Fort, Phani Dongar hill etc once you reach the summit. The best time to do the Harihar Fort Trek is from June to February
Kalavantin Durg
Location: Situated along the old Mumbai-Pune trade route in the Raigad district of Maharashtra,
Height/ Elevation: At an altitude of 701 metres (2,300 feet) above sea level
The Challenge: Referred as a trekker’s paradise, the fortress was constructed in honour of Queen Kalavantin. The trek to and from the fortress is via narrow and zigzag stairs (as high as 2 feet.) carved on the edges of the rocky mountain slopes. There are no guard rails or ropes and one has to trek without any support. As the trekkers move their way up, the trail becomes notably steeper and vertigo-inducing. It takes about a little over three hours to reach the top from the base village Thakurwadi.
Travellers Reward: The adrenaline rush of an exposed climb will leave you in hypnotic awe. Reward yourself with a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains, valleys, waterfalls on adjacent mountains and the Prabalgad fort. The best time for the Kalavantin Durg Trek is the monsoon season.
