According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, Instagram’s new Twitter rival “Threads” has built up over 100 million users in less than a week. Threads is now the app with the fastest growth rate in history. For recording 100 million active users, OpenAI’s ChatGPT previously held the record, although it took the app two months to reach the landmark.
Last week, the new microblogging platform was introduced in 100 nations, including India. The software gained 30 million users in its first 24 hours, making it the fastest-downloaded app ever, and it quickly became popular with users. However, Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, revealed on Friday that Threads had surpassed 70 million sign-ups.
The new social media site directly competes with Elon Musk’s Twitter, which has been in disarray ever since the Tesla CEO acquired control of the site. Though it was created by the Instagram crew and is branded as such, Twitter-like text-based updates are the main focus of Threads. Users can post up to 500-character text updates that can also include images and videos using the standalone app after logging in with their Instagram account.
Many well-known celebrities flocked to the microblogging site when Threads launched. Kim Kardashian, Oprah, and Kylie Jenner are just a few of the famous people who have accounts on the website. Many news organizations, including Vogue, use Threads, along with well-known companies like Apple, Spotify, Netflix, and Vogue.
According to experts, Twitter may face stiff competition in the future from Threads. Musk has struggled to modernize the platform since purchasing Twitter for $44 billion. He has cut back on staff and made policy changes that have angered some of Twitter’s most devoted users.
After learning about the release of the Threads app, Musk responded angrily, accusing Meta of “unlawful misappropriation” of trade secrets. In reality, Twitter has filed a lawsuit against Meta’s new social networking app, alleging that it is a “copycat” of a platform that Twitter constructed by employing personnel from that company.
