The 2016 film Sanam Teri Kasam introduced audiences to Harshvardhan Rane and Mawra Hocane, marking their Hindi film debuts. While the movie received praise for the lead pair’s captivating chemistry, it failed to make a significant impact at the box office.
However, over time, it developed a cult following, leading to its re-release last Friday (February 7) due to overwhelming public demand. What followed was nothing short of extraordinary, as the film reopened to massive enthusiasm, managing to earn double its original revenue within just three days.
Despite the current success, Harshvardhan Rane recalls feeling deeply disappointed when the film struggled to attract audiences nearly nine years ago. Reflecting on that time, he admitted in an interview that the experience was akin to heartbreak. He rejected the idea of acting indifferent, stating, “Break-up jab hota hai, dil toot ta hi hai. People, who try to be cool and say that they are unfazed, lie. I can also say that the failure of Sanam Teri Kasam didn’t bother me, but I won’t because it really broke my heart.”
With time, he has come to terms with the film’s initial failure and now understands why it struggled in 2016. Looking back, he acknowledges that as newcomers, neither he nor Mawra were well-known, making it unlikely for audiences to invest their time and money in the film.
“I wouldn’t want to watch a film with unknown faces. We were so new at that time. So, it would be wrong for me to expect people to spend money and watch our film,” he explained. Over the years, he has made peace with it and has since gained a deeper understanding of the business of filmmaking. “Today, I understand the science and commerce behind filmmaking. I now know why people didn’t watch Sanam Teri Kasam in theatres,” he added.
