Calcutta HC Informed About Female Inmates’ Pregnancy In West Bengal Jails, 196 Babies Born Till Now

The jails or prisons are not just meant to give punishment to all those who have committed crimes but they are also centers where the criminals are given a chance to correct themselves, leave their criminal lives behind and join the mainstream of the society.

But what will you say if you come to know that instead of getting reformed, the female prisoners are getting pregnant?

As per Bar and Bench, an Amicus curiae has informed the Calcutta High Court that the female prisoners are getting pregnant and till now, more than 196 babies have taken birth so far.

Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Supratim Bhattacharya found the matter very serious and concerning and they have stated that the matter will be placed before the division bench on next Monday.

The Amicus curiae has told the court that the majority of the prison’s employees is male and demanded that the male employees should be prohibited completely from entering the premises or enclosures where female inmates are imprisoned.

The matter is really concerning and strict action should be taken in this regard.
