Call Forwarded Scam: All you need to know & what step the govt is taking

The Indian government took a bold step to prevent phone forwarding scams. The DoT has ordered telecom firms to discontinue USSD-based call forwarding nationwide on April 15, 2024. Despite its disruption, this action protects millions of smartphone users from scammers who use this feature.

Why Pause Call Forwarding?

The call forwarding feature lets users divert incoming calls to another number, which is useful in many scenarios. It’s now a double-edged sword. Scammers use it to access unsuspecting victims’ phone lines and bank accounts.

Understanding the Threat: USSD Codes and Scams

USSD codes are alphanumeric characters and symbols (* and #) used to access telecom services like account balance checks and call forwarding. Scammers often imitate internet service providers or telecom operators to frighten victims by stating their mobile accounts are compromised.

USSD Scammers’ Deception

The scheme uses social engineering. Scammers ask victims to dial *401# to activate call forwarding. This code gives the fraudster access to the victim’s calls and texts. They can steal money using sensitive information like bank OTPs.

Being Safe in a Changing World

Alternative call forwarding mechanisms will be needed after USSD-based call forwarding is discontinued. The fight against call forwarding scams continues. Here’s how to be vigilant:

  • Verify Calls: Avoid unsolicited telecom provider calls. Resist solicitations to dial USSD codes or provide personal information.
  • Check Call Forwarding Status: While USSD-based call forwarding is suspended, some phone models may feature in-built call forwarding alternatives. Learn about these options and use *#21# to check if your calls are routed.
  • Contact Through Official Channels: Contact your service provider through their official methods for phone account issues. Check your service provider’s website or app for verified phone numbers or URLs.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication: Enable 2FA for all online accounts that offer it. This increases security by requiring a unique code texted to your phone and your password for login attempts.
  • Stay Informed: Follow your telecom provider’s website or trusted news publications to stay current on frauds.

The Road Ahead

Temporarily suspending USSD-based call forwarding services addresses an increasing concern. Telecom providers and the government will develop secure, user-friendly call forwarding methods as the situation changes.

Public knowledge and alertness are still key to fighting call forwarding scams. By learning the strategies and being vigilant, people may protect themselves and their money. Always be safe than sorry.
