The Mumbai Police on Thursday brought charges against an unknown individual in connection with a deepfake video that purported to be of former cricket player Sachin Tendulkar.
The former Indian cricket player blasted a bogus film that was going viral under his name on social media on Monday. Tendulkar is seen endorsing an online game in the altered video, using his daughter Sara as an example, who makes Rs 1.8 million a day from her predictions.
Following the video’s release, Tendulkar sent a statement on his social media account emphasising that the film was altered and that he had no involvement with it.
The well known cricket player expressed his displeasure at the “rampant misuse of technology.” In addition, he urged people to be more watchful and cautious and to put an end to the “spread of misinformation and deepfakes.”
Union minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar took to ‘X’ following Tendulkar’s social media post to announce that stricter regulations will be enforced under the IT Act to guarantee platform compliance.
Following Bollywood star Rashmika Mandanna as a victim of deepfake technology abuse is Tendulkar. Delhi Police moved quickly to prosecute the person who posted the actor’s phoney footage on social media.
Deepfakes, a combination of “deep learning” and “fake,” are artificial intelligence-produced, incredibly lifelike audio or video recordings. These falsely presented media can show people saying or doing things they never did, raising a number of moral and social issues.
