Chamkila Biopic Review: Diljit Dosanjh Shines Bright in Imtiaz Ali’s Masterpiece

Chamkila FIRST Review Out: The public appeared to be really thrilled with Imtiaz Ali’s musical biography “Chamkila,” which stars Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra on Netflix. The late great singer Amar Singh Chamkila, dubbed the “Elvis Presley of Punjab,” transports us to his era and way of life in Chamkila, a film directed by Imtiaz Ali.

A preview of Chamkila was held on Monday night by Netflix and MAMI, and a number of celebrities, including Mrunal Thakur, Avneet Kaur, Shweta Basu Prasad, Ishwak Singh, and Bhuvan Bam, attended. Following the showing, Shweta and Ishwak discussed their thoughts and deemed Chamkila “essential viewing.”

Shweta shared the review with the MAMI team and added, “I will most definitely suggest that others see the film. It resembled a film of a live concert. I simply have a much deeper understanding of Amr Singh Chamkila. People should see it, in my opinion, because of Diljit, Imtiaz Sir, and the soundtrack. It’s really expertly constructed.

“It needs to be on everyone’s must-watch list,” Ishwak revealed. It’s a really unique movie. It’s deeply entrenched, poignant, and inspirational. It also has the feistiness and wildness of Imtiaz Ali.

A user on X said, “Chamkila is a fantastic movie.” Superb writing and directing by Imtiaz Ali Amazing tunes from @arrahman. Excellent work by @diljitdosanjh.

The life of the renowned Punjabi vocalist, who tragically passed away at the age of 27, is chronicled in Chamkila. Diljit recently opened out about the challenges he had when trying to mimic Chamkila’s distinctive voice.

Diljit revealed the difficulty of mimicking Chamkila’s musical approach in an interview with Film Companion, saying, “It was difficult because people have heard Chamkila’s songs like rhymes.” It will thus, in 100% of cases, seem strange if someone else is singing it. However, we did try, and AR Rahman Sir’s crew was really helpful to us.

Diljit provided insight on the lighter dynamics that existed on set, especially when he and Imtiaz Ali mismatched Parineeti Chopra’s intended pitch while following the musician’s lead. He said, “Because Amarjot’s portion was more difficult, I did not have any hopes from Parineeti either. Amarjot has a high-pitched singing voice. Thus, we have made an effort. Neither Parineeti nor I can sing like Amarjot or Chamkila. All we have done is try. People could enjoy it since it is related to the plot of the movie.
