Children frequently suffer from constipation.Dr. Vaishnavi Chandramohan offers five lifestyle advice for children with constipation.

Constipation in children is a typical concern for parents, but persistent cases may necessitate lifestyle changes. Dr. Vaishnavi Chandramohan, MD (Pediatrics) and Fellowship in Infectious Diseases, Consultant – General Pediatrics, Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Marathahalli, Bengaluru, gives five lifestyle strategies to treat children’s constipation

The diet is important for digestive health, and a lack of fiber can induce constipation in youngsters. To support regular bowel movements, your child’s diet should contain fibre-rich fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Limit processed meals and cow’s milk and keep your toddler hydrated.

Train your youngster to use the restroom in the morning after they wake up. Comfortable and child-friendly bathrooms include a step stool for toilet access and time to relax. Getting your child up 10 minutes early can also assist. Squatting on the toilet makes evacuation easier.

Physical activity stimulates bowel movements by contracting intestinal muscles. Sports, biking, and walking are age-appropriate physical activities for kids. Avoiding sedentary activities like screen time can also help you stay active. Dance, play badminton, or play in the park or garden with your family.

Preventing constipation in children requires proper toilet training. Patience and praise will help your toddler learn to use the toilet. Understand and support bowel movement fears and discomfort.

Your youngster may benefit from probiotics to control bowel movements and relieve constipation. Yogurt, buttermilk, paneer, pickles, and fermented idlis and dhoklas contain probiotics.

Children with constipation should be treated holistically with food, routine, physical activity, toilet training, and probiotics. These lifestyle tips relieve constipation and improve health over time.
