On Thursday night, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel to find out how things were going in the state after the strong cyclone “Biparjoy” hit. PM Modi wanted to know, among other things, what the state government was doing to protect wild animals, especially the lions in the Gir forest.

“PM Modi called me on the phone and asked me everything he needed to know about the situation in Gujarat after cyclone Biparjoy hit. He also asked what the government was doing to keep all wild animals, including the lions of Gir Forest, safe,” Patel wrote on Twitter.

A press release from the government said that the CM also went to the State Emergency Operations Center in Gandhinagar and met with top officials to talk about the situation.

During the meeting, Patel was told that as many as a million people from coastal districts like Kutch, Junagadh, and Devbhumi Dwarka were moved to temporary shelters as a safety step before the cyclone hit the coast on Thursday evening.

The state Forest Department has set up 184 “rapid action” groups to rescue wild animals and clear falling trees in the entire Asiatic lion zone. This is in addition to the teams that have been set up to fix the power, water, and roads.

Some radio-collared lions are tracked by satellite signals, while others are followed by people who work in the bush. The report also said that the movements of 40 lions who live near the coast are being closely watched.

It also said that as many as 58 control rooms have been set up to handle wildlife emergencies. The IMD said that the cyclone in the Arabian Sea began making landfall at Jakhau Port in the Kutch area around 6:30 p.m. and would be done by midnight.
