Delhi Govt’s Financial Hurdle Puts RRTS Project at Risk

The money was intended to be used to build the portion of the RRTS system that will link the national capital to Rajasthan and Haryana.

On Monday, the Supreme Court criticized the Delhi government for saying it was unable to contribute money to the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) project’s construction and ordered it to provide information about the money used for advertising over the previous three fiscal years. The money was allocated for the RRTS extension that will link the national capital to Rajasthan and Haryana.

Justice S. K. Kaul and Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia’s bench ordered the AAP government to submit an affidavit outlining financial information within two weeks. The bench received the instruction after the Delhi government’s attorney informed the court that there were insufficient finances and that they were unable to offer funding.

A bench of the Supreme Court made up of Justices S K Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia ordered the AAP-led Delhi government to submit an affidavit containing financial information within two weeks.

“The Delhi government has stated that it is unable to provide funding for a group initiative. Since lack of funding is a barrier to this project, we request that the NCT of Delhi produce an affidavit outlining the amounts used for advertising because the project is crucial to the country. Details for previous fiscal years may be provided, the bench stated.

The government’s inability to present documentation of the cash allotted for the building has drawn questions from the court.

Why don’t you have money for a project that will assure seamless transportation if you have money for advertisements? Court inquired.

The Delhi government has stated that it is unable to contribute money to a shared project. We request the NCT of Delhi to produce an affidavit outlining the monies used for advertising as the project is of national importance because a lack of funding is a barrier to its completion. For previous fiscal years, details could be provided.
