On Thursday, further seismic vibrations were detected in Delhi. Afghanistan experienced seismic shockwaves from an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale.
Following a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that rocked Afghanistan on Thursday, there were aftershocks. The epicentre of the earthquake was 241 km northeast of Kabul.
“Earthquake of Magnitude: 6.1, Occurred on 11-01-2024, 14:50:24 IST, Lat: 36.48 & Long: 70.45, Depth: 220 Km, Location: Afghanistan,” the National Centre for Seismology observed on Twitter.
In Pakistan, the cities of Lahore, Islamabad, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also experienced strong earthquakes. The US Geological Survey reports that at 2:50 PM on January 11, the magnitude 6.4 Ritcher earthquake in Afghanistan was still visible at a depth of 206.6 km, 44 km SSW of Jurm.
There have not yet been any reports of fatalities or property losses. The Pakistan Meteorological Department reports that the 6.0-magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:20 p.m. (local time) in the Hindu Kush area at a depth of 213 kilometres.
Following the shocks, several other cities trembled, including Sargodha in Punjab, Khushab and its environs, Mandi Bahauddin, Bhakkar, and Nowshera. According to PTI, quoting Geo News, there were also tremors near Muzaffarabad, in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Chief meteorologist of PMD, Sardar Sarfaraz, was reported by Geo News as saying that there is a significant likelihood of aftershocks in the area due to the tremendous strength of the earthquake. He remarked, “The same had also occurred in Japan, which had been hit by a strong earthquake on January 1.”
Pakistan is situated in a seismically active area that frequently experiences tremors and earthquakes of various intensities. In October 2005, the nation had its worst earthquake to date, which claimed over 74,000 lives and caused immense destruction.
