Dhanashree Verma, Yuzvendra Chahal’s ex-wife, spoke up about their divorce, saying she experienced an emotional breakdown during the process. In a Tuesday podcast, Verma also responded to Chahal’s court appearance by donning a “Be Your Own Sugar Daddy” T-shirt.
Verma talked candidly about her experience on the day of the divorce on the Human of Bombay podcast, remembering how she ended up howling in court despite believing she was mentally prepared. I still remember when I was standing there and the verdict was about to be given. Even though we were so well-prepared mentally, I got so emotional. I started howling in front of everybody.”
“I couldn’t even express what I was feeling at that point. I remember that I just kept crying, I was howling and crying. Of course! All of that happened, and he (Chahal) walked out first,” she added.
Dhanashree reflected on the “Be your own sugar daddy” T-shirt worn by Chahal.
Chahal sparked controversy as he wore a t-shirt that read “Be Your Sugar Daddy” during the court proceedings. Talking about that incident, Verma said…
“You know that people are going to blame you. Before I had even known that this T-shirt stunt had happened, we were all aware that people were going to blame me for this.”
The 28-year-old reflected on watching Chahal’s T-shirt after leaving the court and said, “Are bhai, WhatsApp kar deta. T-shirt kyu pehna hai? (You should have sent it on WhatsApp. Why wear the T-shirt?”
Dhanashree stressed the importance of maturity.
Dhanashree emphasized the importance of maturity by stating, “I think you need to be mature about this.” That’s the route I’ve taken. I opted for maturity over immaturity and making public-pleasing immature utterances. However, I wouldn’t go down that route since I don’t want to go against either his or my family’s morals. Respect must be maintained. “Verma said
She also spoke up about the societal expectations for women, “All that time you spend just flashes, it comes as a woman humko sikhaya jaata hai ki nibhaao, bhandh ke chalo, karo. (As a woman, we are taught to keep everything settled and manage). Because we know our societies very well, our mothers know our societies very well. You are going to be labelled,” Verma expressed.
“You have to put in an effort,” Verma said about her support of Chahal during their marriage. Everyone has seen how much I have defended my partner, and I am aware of it. I’ve been there for everything, no matter how big or small. Perhaps that’s why my feelings surfaced.
“Your behavior on that specific day reflects who you are as a person,” she said. Chahal and Verma were married in 2020 and divorced in 2025.
In a previous podcast, India’s top player Chahal disclosed that they were projecting a phony picture of a contented marriage.
