Does Marriage Lead to Weight Gain? New Study Reveals Surprising Insights

A study conducted by the National Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw, Poland, found that marriage can contribute to weight gain, though the effects differ for men and women.

Key Findings of the Study

The study analyzed data from 2,405 participants, with an equal number of men and women, and a median age of 50. Among them:

  • 24% were classified as obese
  • 38.3% were overweight
  • 35.3% maintained a normal weight

The study revealed:

  • Married men are three times more likely to become obese and have a 62% higher chance of being overweight compared to unmarried men.
  • Married women have a 39% higher risk of becoming overweight, but their risk of obesity does not increase significantly.

Why Does Marriage Impact Weight?

According to the study, published in the journal Economics & Human Biology, weight gain in men is most noticeable within the first five years of marriage. The researchers suggest that married men tend to:

  • Eat more due to regular, home-cooked meals
  • Exercise less as lifestyle changes take effect

Earlier studies have even dubbed this phenomenon “happy fat”, suggesting that close relationships contribute to gradual weight gain. The findings showed a significant difference in Body Mass Index (BMI) between married and unmarried men.

Do Women Gain Weight Differently?

The research also found that both men and women tend to gain weight each year after marriage. However, women’s weight gain is influenced by additional social, psychological, and environmental factors, which are still being studied in detail.
