The Indian cricket team will be playing a 3-match T20I series against Afghanistan starting from today (11 January 2024) and everyone is excited to see Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in action as they both have made a comeback after 14 months.
Many cricket fans were of the opinion that Virat Kohli should open with Rohit Sharma as the former is in great form but the Indian head coach, Rahul Dravid has put rest to all the speculations by making it clear that young cricketer Yashasvi Jaiswal will open with Rohit Sharma as it gives them a right-left combination.
Rahul Dravid told the mediapersons, “As of now we’ll certainly be opening with Rohit and Jaiswal. But when you have a squad and a team, you need to have the flexibility to do whatever’s required if that is in the best interest of the team and that gives us the best chance to succeed. So nothing is closed but certainly we are really happy with what Jaiswal has done as an opener for us and given us a left-right combination as well at the top.”
This is the only T20I series that India will play before the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024 which will take place in June and this is what Rahul Dravid has to say in this regard, “There are not a lot of games after the One-Day World Cup for us in terms of the T20 format. This T20 World Cup is slightly different from that perspective. We have to rely on the cricket that we have and also on a little bit of the IPL. The boys will play T20 cricket here and the IPL but they might not get the opportunity to play together so we will just have to work around that. We just have to adapt and be flexible.”
What do you think, who should open the innings with Rohit Sharma?
