Drone Photography Essentials: A Beginner’s Guide to Capturing Stunning Aerial Shots

There is absolutely nothing like an aerial perspective of some of the most amazing places on earth and what better than a drone to get a bird’s eye view of these destinations. Here’s the beginner’s guide to familiarise you with some essentials for drone photography that you should be aware of.

Before you go anywhere with your drone, research and explore international law to know which countries are drone-friendly and which one’s aren’t. Some countries do not allow you to enter with a drone and it can be a very frustrating experience, so better do your homework before starting.

Lighting – It’s important to plan the lighting to avoid overexposure and shadows.A clear, sunny afternoon at the beach may be just what you love, but it is not good for drone photography as it usually results in overexposed shots. So, check the daylight hours and plan accordingly. Additionallybe mindful of weather changes like strong winds, rain, or fog, which can impact the drone’s performance and camera quality.

Camera Settings – Also don’t forget to adjust camera settings like ISO, shutter speed, and exposure for optimal results. Learning how to manually control these will enhance the quality of your shots.

Extra Batteries – Don’t forget to carry extra batteries to avoid forced landing situations that can be dangerous. Although some drones come with multiple batteries, you can easily get them separately. Even the best drones usually give you a flight time of around 20 minutes and lesser if you are flying it on a windy day. So, even though extra batteries can be expensive but they are well worth the cost.

Charger – Even with the extra batteries, you might need to charge them on the go, so do carry a charger. Moreover, batteries need time to cool between recharging and usage, so be prepared.

Smartphone – Even with a separate controller, you need a smartphone  to control the screen and other flight-related functions. Moreover, you will need it to request airspace clearance and download related Apps.

Launching/Landing Pad – A launching/landing pad is essential if you are flying on certain type of terrains. If the drone hits grass, sticks or debris, it might get damaged, so it is recommended to use a pad.

Drone Insurance – Consider getting drone insurance to cover potential accidents or damage, especially when flying in unfamiliar or crowded areas.

These are some of the essentials that must be taken care of before starting your adventure.
