Ex Eng Pacer Makes Big Statement, Feels Sam Konstas Won’t Last More Than 10 Test Matches

Former England fast-bowler Steve Harmison has expressed mixed feelings about Australia’s latest batting debutant, Sam Konstas, and his potential future in Test cricket. Harmison recently commented on the 19-year-old’s prospects, suggesting that Konstas might not “even play 10 Tests” or could become a “superstar if he delivers”.

Harmison’s skepticism stems from Konstas’ unrefined defensive technique, which was exposed during the two Test matches he played against India. Konstas posted scores of 60, 8, 23, and 22, showcasing glimpses of his talent and audacity. His batting range was evident in his ability to execute innovative shots, including ramps and scoops off a bowler as formidable as Jasprit Bumrah, and his confident on-field demeanor against the Indian team. However, Indian pacers were quick to capitalize on the technical flaws in his game, raising questions about his readiness for the demands of Test cricket.

“Part of me thinks Sam Konstas won’t play even 10 Test matches,” Harmison said during an interview with talkSPORT cricket. “Part of me thinks this kid can be an absolute superstar if he delivers. He’s got the chat, he’s got the ramps, he’s got the scoops, he’s got the big shots, but has he got a defensive technique to open the batting in Test match cricket against the world’s best?”

Harmison’s comments reflect the divide in opinion over whether Konstas’ aggressive style and raw talent will be enough to secure a lasting place in Australia’s Test side or whether his technical shortcomings will ultimately limit his success at the highest level.
