Ex-Ind Cricketer Issues Warning For Selectors Over Md. Shami’s Return

India’s pace attack is under scrutiny ahead of the much-anticipated Test series against Australia, with Mohammed Shami’s fitness and readiness at the center of the debate. The star pacer, who underwent knee surgery post the 2023 ODI World Cup, made his domestic comeback in a Ranji Trophy match for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh. Shami impressed with a four-wicket haul, igniting calls for his immediate return to international cricket. However, former India batter Aakash Chopra has urged caution.

Aakash Chopra, speaking on his YouTube channel, expressed concerns about rushing Shami back to Test cricket. While acknowledging the selectors’ eagerness to have him in the squad for the Australia series, Chopra emphasized the importance of gradual integration.

“The Indian selectors are very keen to send Mohammed Shami to Australia alongside Rohit (Sharma). However, the Indian team wants him to play a little more cricket. One match in a year and straightaway a Test match—it’s a lot to ask,” Chopra remarked.

Chopra highlighted Shami’s potential as part of a formidable pace trio with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj but maintained that Shami’s current match practice is insufficient. He stressed the importance of ensuring Shami is in peak condition before thrusting him into high-pressure games.

He certainly makes sense.
