Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa has voiced his disapproval of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise for allowing New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra to train at their academy ahead of New Zealand’s Test series against India. Uthappa, speaking on his YouTube channel, expressed concern over CSK’s decision, emphasizing that while franchises often go above and beyond to support their players, a line should be drawn when national interests are at stake, especially when aiding foreign players who compete against India.
Ravindra, a standout for New Zealand, emerged as their top run-scorer in the series as New Zealand achieved a historic 3-0 whitewash against India. Having been part of the CSK squad in IPL 2024, Ravindra utilized the CSK academy to acclimatize to Indian conditions, which Uthappa believes contributed to his performance in the series. “CSK is a beautiful franchise that will always look after its players,” Uthappa said, “but a line has to be drawn where the interest of the country comes ahead, especially when he is a foreign player.”
Uthappa acknowledged that CSK has a strong reputation for supporting its players, but he urged franchises to be mindful when the nation’s interest is involved. “I absolutely love CSK, but when it comes to the country, there should be a line somewhere,” he added, underscoring the need for boundaries when foreign players are involved.
Rachin Ravindra’s performance was pivotal in New Zealand’s rare Test series win over India, capped by a thrilling 25-run victory in the final Test at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Reflecting on the win, Ravindra described it as “something special” that is difficult to put into words, underscoring the significance of New Zealand’s achievement on Indian soil.
