The state of Tamil Nadu is full of architectural marvels that make us acquainted with the Dravidian civilisation and its grand and intricate architectural style, which includes Gopurams, Vimanas, Mandapams, exquisite stone carvings, and Temple Tanks. Here is a list of some of the most revered temples in Tamil Nadu, which are not only places of worship but also symbols of its historical and cultural legacy.

  1. Brihadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur—Referred to as the Big Temple and a UNESCO world heritage site, the temple is dedicated to Shiva. Built by Rajaraja Chola, it is an architectural marvel with exquisite sculptures and atowering vimana (temple tower).
  • Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai- Dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi, & Lord Sundareswarar, an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, this is a masterpiece of Dravidian art and architecture.
  • Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram)-A renowned monument and a UNESCO World Heritage, this temple showcases the architectural brilliance of the Pallava dynasty. It is known for its monolithic rock-cut structures, intricate carvings and sculptures, and proximity to the sea.
  • Ramanathaswamy Temple, Rameswaram– Among one of the twelve Jyotirlinga temples, this temple is renowned for its longest corridor among all Hindu temples in India.
  • The Chidambaram Temple– Dedicated to the cosmic dancer, Nataraja (Lord Shiva Incarnation), is one of the best temples built under the Chola dynasty. The classical dance form of Tamil Nadu, Bharatanatyam is the centre of performance here.
  • Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Chennai: This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is renowned for its grand gopurams (gateway towers) adorned with intricate sculptures that depict stories from Hindu mythology. the Arubathimoovar festival is celebrated here with grandeur.
  • Arunachaleswarar Temple, Tiruvannamalai: Located at the base of the Annamalai hills, Lord Shiva is the deity who is worshipped here as Arunachaleswarar or Annamalaiyar. The temple is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalas.
