FB, X, Instagram may delete inactive users’ data in India

The Indian government considers requiring 72-hour notification for social media platforms to delete user data for three years without response under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act.

The government may set rules for Facebook, Twitter (now X), and Instagram. One idea is to remove the personal data of three-year MIA users on social platforms.

This is part of proposed guidelines accompanying the August-approved Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. Before anything happens, they’ll talk to stakeholders to make sure everyone agrees.

These laws may apply to e-commerce sites, online shops, gaming peeps, and any social media platforms in India, regardless of usage.

The draft guidelines allow certain healthcare professionals and schools to use personal and non-personal data. Public health, research, records, and data are its key uses.

The platform (Fiduciaries) must notify the DPB within 72 hours of a data breach. Users should know what, when, and how the breach happened.

These guidelines provide transparency and platform data responsibility. Keep users informed and notify the Data Protection Board if something goes wrong. This step protects user data and holds platforms accountable for breaches.

Conclusion

Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram may delete user data for three years without a response under new Indian government laws. The August-introduced Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act includes the rules. Online shops, gaming platforms, and e-commerce sites may be affected. Healthcare and education data utilization are included. Platforms must notify the Data Protection Board within 72 hours of a data breach.
