Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a lone survivor of the Air India flight crash that killed 241 people, shared his experience with the media a day after the incident. He spoke about the terrifying moments he escaped and how he survived the crash, detailing his experience in a media interview.
The 40-year-old British citizen of Indian heritage is currently undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad. He spoke with DD News on Friday morning and revealed that he was sitting in 11A, which is an aisle seat next to a left side window and near to an emergency exit, in the economy class section of the plane.
“Even I can’t believe how I came out of it alive. For a moment, I thought I was going to die, but when I opened my eyes and looked around, I realized I was safe,” said Vishwash as he described coming back to his senses post impact in Meghani Nagar.

The aircraft went down 33 seconds after takeoff, crashing into nearby airport structures, which resulted in the deaths of all 12 crew members and 230 passengers. Air India officials provided information confirming that there were 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian on board.
“He looked a bit disturbed, but he was alright. He stated that when the flight took off, it felt like it was hovering for some time before it suddenly flickered green and white and crashed into something,” Kumar told.
Kumar said his part of the aircraft stayed stationary and did not collide with the building’s roof like the rest of the jet did. “When I saw the exit, I thought I could come out. I tried, and I did. Perhaps those who sat on the opposite side of the plane were not able to.”
The British National said that he suffered an injury to his left hand due to the fire that broke out moments after the crash. “I don’t know how I managed to get out. For some reason, I was witnessing deaths of people around me – the cabin crew, two passengers that were sitting beside me… I can say that I came out of the debris,” he said.
