In a reversal of its recent decision, Google has begun restoring some of the Indian digital companies’ apps that were delisted from the Play Store. This move comes after intense criticism from industry bodies and users alike, with concerns raised about unfair practices and potential stifling of the Indian app ecosystem.
Info Edge co-founder Sanjeev Bikchandani confirmed the app restoration. Naukri and 99acres were delisted earlier. Bikchandani thanked his staff for getting the reinstatement and acknowledged the late nights spent on the subject on Twitter.
Industry Criticism Precedes Reversal:
Delisting Scope:
Google initially removed over a dozen apps from major Indian companies. The top online marriage site Shaadi.com and the top job search portal Naukri were listed.
Reason for Delisting:
Beyond Matrimonial and Job Search Apps:
Delistings went beyond industries. Entertainment apps like Altt, Stage, and Aha, dating apps like Truly Madly and Quack Quack, audio apps like Kuku FM, and social networking apps like FRND were also affected.
Unsolved Problem:
The reinstatement of some apps is good, but Google’s payment policy enforcement in India remains a problem. Stakeholder interaction and collaboration are essential to promote a fair and healthy Indian digital ecosystem for app creators and users.
