Government puts new NMC rules for generic drugs on hold

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has challenged the National Medical Commission’s Registered Medical Practitioner (Professional Conduct) Regulations 2023, claiming the regulations have been placed in limbo. The IMA praised Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya for his open-minded attitude and cooperation, highlighting the importance of teamwork and advancing healthcare systems.

The National Medical Commission has published new recommendations for physicians. The rules required them to only recommend generic medications, forbade them from receiving gifts from pharmaceutical firms, and prohibited them from supporting any particular prescription brands.

The Indian Medical Association (IMA), which has been challenging the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) recently issued Registered Medical Practitioner (Professional Conduct) Regulations 2023, asserted on Thursday that the government had placed the regulations in limbo.

The IMA wrote the Health Minister earlier this week to express significant concerns with the aforementioned laws, one day after its national president Sharad Kumar Agarwal attended the meeting and called a Mandaviya with all the stakeholders to discuss the matter.
