Govt to allow tablet, laptop imports until Sept 2024; ICEA supports the decision

ICEA supports the government’s decision to allow unrestricted laptop and tablet imports until September 2024. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade is helping develop the Import Management System transition, which begins on November 1, 2023.

The India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) applauded the government’s decision to allow laptop and tablet imports until September 2024. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce is helping develop this transition to the Import Management System, which will begin on November 1, 2023.

ICEA Chairman Pankaj Mohindroo believes this decision will help the industry, especially during government talks on import regulations.

HP, Apple, Dell, Lenovo, and others import PCs, laptops, and tablets to meet India’s rising demand, especially during the festive season, so this is a relief.

Meanwhile, the Indian government wants PC and laptop manufacturers to share their three-year import data. PC and laptop manufacturers met with Ministry of Information Technology officials last month to discuss import licensing and quotas, according to industry sources.

These discussions propose linking IT hardware imports to a company’s local manufacturing value and electronic export value.

Mohindroo emphasizes the importance of policy changes in India’s quest to become a self-sufficient and competitive electronics manufacturing hub.

“The industry is now working with DGFT to ensure a smooth transition from the current process to the Import Management System from November 1,” said.

The government wants $300 billion in electronics production by FY26. The new Production-Linked Incentive (PLI 2.0) Scheme for IT Hardware will allocate Rs 22,890 crore over six years.
