The Indian government is drafting an AI policy framework by June-July to promote economic growth and mitigate dangers. The government also reminds internet platforms and social media intermediaries to stop misinformation and deepfakes.
Concerned about deepfakes and user harm, the government announced on Tuesday that it will release a draft AI regulatory framework by June-July.
At a Nasscom event in New Delhi, Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar stated the government will shortly issue a draft AI legislation framework.
Minister: “The goal is to harness AI for economic growth and address potential risks and harms.
“We will fully realize AI’s potential but set guardrails to prevent misuse,” he said.
The Nasscom-BCG research, released at the event, predicted 25% CAGR growth in India’s AI market to $17 billion by 2027, along with AI investments.
This week, the Indian government reaffirmed that internet platforms and social media intermediaries must prevent misinformation and deepfakes.
Chandrasekhar said on X that the MCA and Meta would start a WhatsApp fact-checking helpline in the country.
“Use credible fact checkers to label misinformation is good,” the minister wrote.
“All internet platforms/intermediaries in India have a legal obligation to ensure no misinformation/deepfakes are posted by their users,” he said.
The government announced earlier this month that it is regularly evaluating intermediaries’ compliance with the IT Rules, 2021 and the current IT Ministry recommendation.
Conclusion
In response to deepfakes and consumer harm, the Indian government will release a proposed AI regulatory framework by June-July 2021. The goal is to use AI to boost economic growth and mitigate hazards. The government has also emphasized its legal commitment to remove misinformation and deepfakes from internet and social media sites. Compliance with the IT Rules, 2021 and the newest IT Ministry advise is monitored by the government.
