Government won’t extend deadline for mandatory use of Aadhaar-based payment for MGNREGS

The Central government will not extend the deadline for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme employees to use Aadhaar exclusively. despite August 31, government sources said. The government mandated Aadhaar-based payment system (ABPS) for MGNREGS wage payments in January 2023.

The obligatory Aadhaar-based payment system (ABPS) started on February 1. This deadline was extended until March 31, June 30, and August 31. However, Ministry of Rural Development officials said the deadline will not be extended. More over 90% of active workers have Aadhaar accounts, showing excellent adoption.

The government said in June that 13.75 crore of 14.28 crore active beneficiaries had Aadhaar.  According to the ministry, 12.17 crore Aadhaar numbers were authenticated and 77.81% qualified for ABPS. May 2023 ABPS handled 88% of salary payments.

The administration added that MGNREGS participants’ job card data cannot be erased if they are disqualified for ABPS.

Nearly 42% of Assam, 23% of Arunachal Pradesh, 70% of Meghalaya, and 37% of Nagaland employees lack Aadhaar numbers.

ABPS and direct account transfer have been MNREGS payment modalities since 2017. Ministry officials advised states to hold camps and follow up with beneficiaries to attain 100% ABPS adoption.

The Ministry of Rural Development states that 90% of active employees have Aadhaar accounts, indicating achievement. The government has 13.75 crore active Aadhaar cardholders, validated 12.17 crore, and qualified 77.11% for ABPS. The administration also claimed eligibility cannot remove work card data. Nearly 42% of Assam, 23% of Arunachal Pradesh, 70% of Meghalaya, and 37% of Nagaland employees lack Aadhaar numbers.
