Govinda has broken decades of silence. In a candid new interview, the 1990s superstar openly admitted he was deeply attracted to actress Neelam Kothari — his most popular on-screen partner of that era. His words are measured, but the emotion behind them is unmistakable. And after all these years, the admission still carries weight.

Govinda Speaks Freely About His Feelings for Neelam

In his conversation with host Siddharth Kannan, Govinda did not dodge the question about Neelam. Instead, he answered with a kind of quiet honesty that Bollywood rarely offers. He described her as someone who looked like a doll and said her personality left a deep impression on him from the very first time he watched her films.

He recalled that he would whistle in admiration watching her on screen, never once imagining he would someday share the same frame with her. When they eventually became co-stars, he said, he could barely believe it.

“She Was the Kind of Woman Any Man Would Lose His Heart To”

This is not the first time Govinda has spoken this openly. As far back as 1990, in an interview with Stardust, he said directly: “We met so often, and the more I got to know her, the more I liked her. She was the kind of woman any man would have lost his heart to. I lost mine.”

That quote, over three decades old, reads almost more confessional than anything he said recently. However, in the new interview, Govinda added important context about how romantic dynamics worked differently in that era. He explained that back then, romance between co-stars was not what it is today. It was about proximity, chemistry, and what he called “dekhne maatr ka romance” — a romance of simply looking at each other.

A Pairing That Defined an Era of Bollywood

Govinda and Neelam were among the most beloved on-screen pairs of the late 1980s. They worked together across more than a dozen films in just a few years. Their collaborations included Love 86 and Ilzaam in 1986, followed by Khudgarz and Sindoor in 1987. By 1989, they had appeared together in Farz Ki Jung, Billoo Badshah, Taaqatwar, and Gharana.

Every one of those films performed well. Their songs became chartbusters and their chemistry felt effortless on screen. In hindsight, Govinda’s recent admission explains some of what audiences were actually watching.

Where Are They Now — And Why This Moment Matters

Govinda has been absent from cinema since Rangeela Raja in 2019, which failed at the box office. His return to public conversations, therefore, carries extra weight. Audiences are genuinely curious about where he stands — personally and professionally.

Neelam, meanwhile, has found a new generation of fans through her appearance in Season 3 of Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives on Netflix in 2024. Her visibility has brought renewed interest in her story, and consequently, in her history with Govinda.

His candour now, at this particular moment, feels less like a slip and more like a choice. Sometimes the most interesting thing a star can do is simply tell the truth.
