Following rioting in Haldwani, Uttarakhand, seven days after restrictions were put in place, the town’s officials lifted a curfew in the Banbhoolpura neighbourhood. The mob violence that broke out over the destruction of a “illegal” madrassa peaked at Banbhoolpura. Five individuals lost their lives as a result of stone-pelting and arson, while over a hundred others were injured.
Curfew in the remainder of Banbhoolpura was eased for two hours, from 9 to 11 a.m., in accordance with an official order. Additionally, citizens were permitted to attend market areas and stores selling necessities remained open.
After presenting their admission cards, students in the vicinity were allowed to proceed to their designated exam locations for the board examinations.
The order said that every violation will result in penalties under section 188 of the CrPC.
In the meantime, the curfew in Nainital was kept relaxed and included Gaujajali, Railway Bazar, and the FCI godown area from 9 am to 4 pm.
Many police officers were forced to take shelter at a police station on February 8 due to violence surrounding the destruction of an illegally constructed madrassa in the Banbhoolpura district. The police station was then set on fire by the crowd.
