Former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh has expressed his surprise and disappointment over Sanju Samson’s exclusion from India’s squad for the Champions Trophy 2025. The squad, announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar during a press conference in Mumbai on January 18, does not feature Samson despite his impressive performances in the ODI format.
Since making his ODI debut against Sri Lanka in July 2021, Samson has played 16 matches and accumulated 510 runs at an outstanding average of 56.66. His most recent outing in the 50-over format saw him score a brilliant 108 against South Africa in Paarl. However, despite these credentials, the 30-year-old wicketkeeper-batter has been left out of the squad for the upcoming marquee tournament.
Harbhajan, visibly upset by the decision, voiced his frustration, particularly given Samson’s consistent ability to score runs. “I truly feel bad for him,” Harbhajan remarked during an interaction. “He scores runs, but he is dropped. I understand only 15 players can be selected, but his batting suits this format. He has an average of 55-56, yet he isn’t even considered as a backup wicketkeeper. When we talk about including him, people question whose place he would take. But places can always be made.”
Samson’s absence from the squad has sparked debate, especially given his strong record in the format. Fans and analysts alike will be closely watching to see if the decision to exclude him will prove wise or if it will reignite conversations about selection criteria and opportunities for consistent performers like Samson.
