Ilaiyaraaja, born Gnanathesikan on June 3, 1943, in Pannaipuram, Tamil Nadu, is celebrated as one of India’s most revered music composers. Despite his official birth date, Ilaiyaraaja chooses to celebrate his birthday on June 2 each year—a decision rooted in deep respect for the late M. Karunanidhi, former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and a towering figure in Tamil politics and culture.

Karunanidhi, born on June 3, 1924, was not only a political stalwart but also a prolific writer and a passionate advocate for the Tamil language and arts. He conferred upon Ilaiyaraaja the honorific title “Isaignani,” meaning “The Musical Sage,” recognizing his monumental contributions to music. Ilaiyaraaja has often expressed profound admiration for Karunanidhi’s dedication to Tamil culture, stating, “June 3 is Kalaignar’s birthday. I haven’t even done a little bit of the great service that he has done for the Tamil language. I feel proud that we share a birthday. But in my opinion, Tamil Nadu should only wish Kalaignar on June 3. So, I decided to celebrate my birthday on June 2.”

This gesture underscores Ilaiyaraaja’s humility and his reverence for Karunanidhi’s legacy. By shifting his birthday celebrations to June 2, Ilaiyaraaja ensures that June 3 remains a day dedicated to honoring Karunanidhi’s contributions to Tamil society. This act of deference has been acknowledged and appreciated by many, including Karunanidhi’s son, M.K. Stalin, the current Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, who has personally felicitated Ilaiyaraaja on June 2, recognizing both his musical genius and his respectful homage to Karunanidhi.

Ilaiyaraaja’s choice reflects a deep cultural ethos, where personal milestones are often intertwined with collective respect for societal icons. His decision to honor Karunanidhi in this manner speaks volumes about his character and the values he upholds, further endearing him to fans and admirers across generations.
