House surgeons in COVID-19 wards of public hospitals are requesting incentive marks in the Medical Recruitment Board exam for government service appointments. They argue that they should be treated equally with contract and post-graduate doctors during the pandemic.

House surgeons in COVID-19 wards of government or government-approved private medical colleges have asked the government to provide them incentive marks in the Medical Recruitment Board exam for government doctor appointments. They want the government to treat them like contract doctors and pandemic post-grads.

Dr. S S Shrinidhi of Vellore wrote to state health secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi that doctors in COVID-19 wards of government or government-approved private medical colleges should receive incentive marks. As part of her mandatory rotatory residential internship, Shrinidhi worked in the COVID ward during the second and third waves. “Despite all precautions, some of my batch mates/ CRRI trainees were also infected with COVID-19 during these stressful periods,” she said.

The Supreme Court ordered the Union of India and its states to create a policy to recognize second-wave healthcare workers in 2021. PM Narendra Modi pledged on May 3 that “individuals providing COVID management services will be given priority in forthcoming regular Government recruitments after they complete 100 days of COVID duty.” The Madras high court granted bonus marks to COVID-19-duty doctors in November.
