Former Indian wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik recently shared a humorous anecdote, playfully rubbing his former coach, Ravi Shastri, about the unceremonious end of his Test career. During a public podcast on Monday, Karthik recounted how Shastri, following India’s 2018 Lord’s Test against England, directly informed him that his time was “done” and he shouldn’t “bother coming” for the next match. This candid revelation offered a stark contrast to how other players, such as Nasser Hussain, typically approached the end of their careers.
Karthik had made a return to Test cricket in June 2018, stepping in for the injured Wriddhiman Saha for India’s Test against Afghanistan. His strong performances in both domestic cricket and white-ball internationals for India had earned him a spot on the summer tour of England. However, he struggled on the challenging green pitches, managing scores of 0 and 20 at Edgbaston, and 1 and 0 at Lord’s. The Lord’s Test ultimately marked his final appearance in the longest format of the game.
“The first thing is, I feel there’s not much in common between me and Nas (Hussain), and I’d like to keep it that way,” Karthik quipped on the Sky Sports Podcast, where he was joined by Shastri, Hussain, and Michael Atherton. He continued, “But sadly, he finished in Lord’s and I finished in Lord’s, the only difference being he went and knocked on the coach’s door, saying, ‘I think I am done’. In my case, the coach came and said, ‘Don’t bother coming for the next Test, I think you are done’.”
Following Karthik’s exclusion from the second Test, India turned to a young Rishabh Pant, who was fresh off an impressive IPL season. Although Pant initially struggled with his wicketkeeping, his exceptional batting prowess quickly made him a strong contender to Wriddhiman Saha, eventually leading to him cementing his place in the team.
