In an unexpected turn of events, the gifted West Indies cricketer Nicholas Pooran has declared his retirement from international cricket at the age of 29. The aggressive wicketkeeper-batter represented the West Indies in 61 ODIs and 106 T20Is during his career, spanning from 2016 to 2024.
Pooran shared his decision in a statement posted on Instagram: “After much thought and reflection, I’ve decided to announce my retirement from international cricket. This game we love has given and will continue to give so much – joy, purpose, unforgettable memories, and a chance to represent the people of the West Indies.”
Having previously led the West Indies side, Pooran expressed that the “privilege” of captaining his national team would remain a cherished memory. Out of the 30 matches across formats where Pooran held the captaincy, he secured eight victories. He stepped down from the leadership role following the team’s surprising first-round elimination from the 2021 T20 World Cup.
He further elaborated on the profound significance of playing for his country: “Wearing that maroon, standing for the anthem, and giving everything I had each time I stepped on the field… it’s hard to put into words what that truly means to me. To have led the team as captain is a privilege I will always hold close to my heart.”
Good luck for the new phase of life!
