In Kerala, National Flag ‘Unfurled’ by a Bird—What’s the Real Story?

On social media, a video of a bird—possibly a crow—seemingly unfurling the Indian national flag after it became stuck during a flag-hoisting ceremony in Kerala has gone viral. Several people have called the incident a “divine intervention.”

A group of people is seen in the video, which was posted by user Shilpa on X, gathering to raise the flag in honor of Independence Day. A moment later, the flag is shown fully unfolded. A crow arrives out of nowhere as the flag gets stuck at the top.

The video rapidly attracted the public’s attention, with many seeing the bird’s actions as a form of divine intervention.

However, a follow-up video that was shared in the comments section reveals the true sequence of events. It is clear that the bird never got close to the flagpole because it was captured from a different angle. Rather, it perched on a coconut leaf behind the flagpole and flew off. This second video makes it quite evident that the bird did not play a direct role in the flag unfurl.

Numerous people on social media expressed their patriotism and called the incident a unique and symbolic occasion.

“That sounds like a beautiful and symbolic moment! Nature stepping in to help during such a significant event must have felt magical. It’s moments like these that make ceremonies even more memorable,” a user said.

Another user added, “Wow, that’s such a heartwarming and symbolic moment! Nature truly has its own way of showing up when we least expect it.”

However, not everyone agreed on this interpretation. A number of people on social media brought up the possibility that the bird had nothing to do with the apartment.

They proposed that the camera perspective gave the impression that the bird had interfered with the flag, even though it had only perched on a coconut tree leaf behind the flagpole.

“Look closer. The bird actually sat on the coconut tree leaf behind and then flew away. It didn’t even come to the pole. The angle makes it look so.”

“I really don’t want to be the party popper but that bird sat on the coconut branch and flew away from there. Have a closer look. The camera is positioned in a way that makes it look like the bird did something.”

“Bird came and sat on the tree behind the flag, nothing to do with the unfurling of the flag.”
